The Angel Ride Stage 1 – 140km London to Dover
Please note all guest riders are responsible for their own spares and safety. We very much hope that we will all stick together but if you are unable to keep up with our pace we will not be able to wait and like wise if you wish to push on ahead that’s fine!
The Route
The route is divided into two sections.
The first ride section, Islington Green to Rochester follows a route out of London which stage 1 of the 2007 Tour de France, London to Canterbury took. This section passes through historic London, across Tower Bridge, through Greenwich and continues parallel to the river Thames where it completes approximately 54km later in the medieval city of Rochester. Relatively flat, this section crosses mostly urban and industrial parts of southeast London, at times along some busy A roads. We have chosen this route because it is the quickest and most direct way out of London to get to Dover.
The second ride section, Rochester to Dover is a much more scenic cycle, mostly covering country lanes hugging the Northern Downs. In parts it rolls along the historic Pilgrims way which in medieval times, was supposed to have been taken by pilgrims from Winchester (Hampshire), to the shrine of Thomas Becket in Canterbury. There is a massive challenge on this route, Hollingbourne Hill. This fierce climb 25km into the second section is short but has a good 18% (gradient) kick to it. At the top, the route continues along the top of the Northern Downs weaving between picturesque Kent villages, along country lanes all the way to Dover finishing at approximately 86km.
The following link has outline maps/gradients with links which will take you to map-my-ride and give you a more detailed map of the route.
